Out & About In Cairns

June 2, 2006 at 1:41 am (Australia, Rowena, Travel)

Since Saturday we have been having a lot of fun in Cairns but not really doing that much.  On Wednesday night a whole group of people from the hostel went out to a meal, karaoke and then a bar.  The only photos I have are at the meal, where I suddenly started a beer mat flipping contest.  I now have it down to an art.

The beer mat flipping contest

During the ten days that we have been in Cairns we have managed to spend more money than we have spent for the whole of Australia beforehand (because all of the activities are very expensive), and there just happens to be a Casino right in the centre of Cairns…so Mel and I decided that we would try our luck for some extra cash.

I went along to the casino and this guy gave Mel and me $10 each in chips.  I played blackjack and I WON $160!!! (I paid the guy his $10 back too).

That's about sixty five quid!  What I was most excited about was that I got a legendary green one-hundred dollar note (a bit like a fifty pound note – they never come out of cash machines) and I had been wanting one for ages.  Unfortunately I will have to spend it at some point so I've just taken a photo (both sides of the note) to commemorate the occasion :-D

My winnings!

I am leaving Cairns a more tanned and a richer person!

Hmmmm!!! There's just been a lot of publicity about how gambling is increasing rapidly in the UK. I'm glad you won though – it must have made up for a bit of the spending. I'm glad you're having such a lot of fun. So are you in Melbourne now? Don't forget to give the Harrises lots of love from us. Suellen phoned the other day and I haven't got round to phoning back yet.
Supper's ready so I've got to go now. Daddy says don't get a taste for gambling!!!

Hmmm, as soon as I read that you'd been to a casino I knew there would be fire and brimstone comments – congratulations that is brilliant! Not sure I approve of Harriet's spelling and grammar though…

Sorry I haven't posted for a while, you seem to have done loads since I last looked. I particularly like your photo of the sunset at Manly – it looks like the sun has turned into a lamp! Very cool effect. The underwater photos are amazing too.

I'm going to Germany for a week with Owen for the World Cup – have you decided where to watch Australia's games? I can't wait!

See you soon, email me if you want – lots of love,

    Jack xxx

    Hi Rowie,
I hope you’re well and that crispy back has turned golden brown! Sorry I haven’t posted in a while but I’ve had a hectic couple of months in work. It looks like you’re having an awesome time. I love the pictures of the reef and the skydive, did your cheeks flap a lot?! The weather has just turned here so you’ll be coming back to some lovely sun. Where do you go to next?

I’m glad you struck it lucky at the Casino and got some cash. The one and only time I’ve been in a casino I lost everything. Not much biz here I was supposed to go to your house on Sunday but I’ve just been offered a VIP ticket to the British Grand Prix so I think I’ll be apologising to your Mum! I’ve just bought a house(fingers crossed if it all goes through) at home in Bangor as an investment so I’ve been sorting out boring mortgages etc. And I’ve started training for the Race for Life which I’m doing with my friend Ruby in a months time. It’s only 5k but I’m very unfit. Your brother is sponsoring me for every minute I run under 30mins so hopefully I can take him to the cleaners!
Anyway enjoy every minute of your last month, it’ll be a wee while before you get to do it again!
    Lots of Love

    Hey Rowboat,

Good work on the casino . :) I hope you enjoy everything a bit more with the extra money!

I’ve been pootling around not doing much at all really. We went sailing on a lovely yacht at the weekend in the Solent (some of Andy’s friends have just bought it – nice) and had a great time. It wasn’t that windy so we did a lot of sitting around on deck feeling posh and exclusive, but there was also a fair amount of running around pulling ropes getting sails up and down though! Lots of fun. Another hectic weekend coming up, a posh engagement party in London on Friday, then home for Clare’s wedding, and then back here for a regatta on Sunday. And then next week it’s bumps! And the week after that, the ball. Very exciting times.

Keep having fun, and remember to wear suncream!

    Hello Roo,
Our time in Cairns was so amazing and now we have less than two weeks left travelling together which sucks. Wish we were going to be travelling longer as I have had such a good time with you.

So I thought I would let you know that it was a good read…what I did read and some of the photo’s are breathtaking…..especially the one at world’s end…and i thought it was just a gay pub in Camden! I hope you do get to travel again and enjoy yourself too! Take care Laila

oh and I went to the neighbours pub night and was soooo disappointed that Harold came the week before and I wasn’t there long enough to attempt again! But I did see sexy Dr. Karl Kennedy, Tad and Tess the teacher….it was great fun and I got their autographs on some beer coasters! I was well pleased with myself! Did you manage any autographs?

  10. rowena said,

No I didn’t get any autographs! :( I really wanted to meet Harold too, and Karl! The street they show on Neighbours, Pin Oak Court was about a 45min-hour drive from Melbourne city centre and they did tours for about $30 but we just went ourselves and luckily, there was a tour group going round so we managed to nick the sign for a couple of photos!

Glad you enjoyed the blog – I’m going back to Sri Lanka in three weeks and I can’t wait!
